Impact of the Sports Funding Grant 2016-17

The sports funding is directed towards the development of sport in the school.

  • A PE advisory teacher has been working closely with the school throughout the year

  • The Curriculum for the whole school has been reviewed to include a better range of topics and skills

  • Audit of resources have taken place and new resources purchased

  • Staff were supported with planning using the new curriculum and resources

  • Training has been provided to encourage more activity in lessons incorporating co-operative games and with the delivery of the new units of work

  • During the spring term teachers took part in team teaching/demonstration lessons with the PE Advisor to develop teaching skills further.

There has been increased participation in borough sporting events this academic year through being a member of the Barnet Sports Partnership:

  • The Year 5 and 6 girls and boys took part in the South Barnet football tournament in January/February at Mill Hill Power League. Our teams participated with great sportsmanship. The girls’ team came 2nd in the tournament securing a place in the final where they played brilliantly, winning several games before being knocked out by the eventual winners-Akiva School.

  • The High 5/Netball Club attended a training workshop at Henrietta Barnett School led by Year 9 girls. They participated in a friendly tournament with other primary schools in the borough

  • The Upper School Basketball Team played in a South/West Barnet tournament at Burnt Oak Leisure Centre in April. The team played brilliantly, winning their first three games comfortably. In their last game, however, they lost a narrow game against the tournament’s eventual winners. This meant that the team came fifth overall (out of twenty).

  • This year, each year group took part in the 'Virtual Challenges' set by the borough. Each year group had their own unique skipping challenge which they practised in their PE lessons. The best skippers’ names were sent off and entered into the competition against all the other schools in the borough.  Well done to Year 4 and 5 for winning their challenges and to Year 3 for coming 3rd! Overall Garden Suburb Juniors came 5th out of 25 schools.

  • A representative from the Sports Partnership, trained Year 5 Sports Ambassadors. These children have been helping with virtual challenges.

The impact of the Sports Funding Grant during 2015-6

  • New resources for PE lessons

  • Paid for the membership of The Barnet Sports Partnership, which provides training for staff and co-ordinates sporting events for the pupils

  • Transport to sporting events

  • Dance specialist working across the school

We would like to use some our Sports Funding Grant to fund a special project. We are currently investigating the possibility developing our school field. The school field is frequently not able to be used if the weather has been wet. Improving the drainage will  have a big impact on increasing the opportunity for physical activity during PE lessons and during playtimes. This is an expensive project and the PTA are also currently fund raising to support it.

Overall the impact of all developments in PE:

  • Confidence of the teachers on delivery of PE lessons is better

  • More able children are challenged and less able supported by new resources

  • PE seems to be more high profile in the curriculum and used to motivate and engage pupils

  • More dance has been incorporated and the children are more engaged. The children are using thinking and creativity skills more in lessons
